Project J'me fais mon cinéma
"Le parfum de la liberté"
“ What feminism means to me is not to let our gender define who we are: you can be whoever you want, no matter whether you are a man, a woman, a boy or a girl.” Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Women have fought for a long time, and are still fighting today, to improve their social condition and to free themselves from the shackles established long ago. Thus arises the sociological dimension of my project: the idea of the free woman, of the woman who seeks to have her own opinions, to deny what she's expected to be destined for, to assert herself in the world. Therefore, I chose to draw my inspiration from Jane Austen’s literature, and more particularly in the genre of love romance that she has successfully developed. Beyond the love story, there's a study of the background in which the author grew up: her books are a written witness of men and women relationships, the significance of social classes, love encounter, the game of seduction and the question of marriage in earlies 1800s.
I chose to rely on Pride and Prejudice (2005) directed by Joe Wright, to anchor my project on the edge of the British Victorian era of the early 19th century. He offers a porttrayal of a woman who wishes to emancipate herself and make her place in society; a portrayal we can also find in famous works like Gone with the Wind, Colette, Miss Potter, Dangerous Liaisons…
